This guide covers how to choose a qualified nutrition professional, what each office offers, and how to get started.
Dietitian or Nutritionist: Why the Credential Matters in Rhode Island
People often use "nutritionist" and "dietitian" as if they mean the same thing. In Rhode Island, the difference matters.
What "RD/RDN" and "LDN" mean
A Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RD or RDN) has completed accredited nutrition education and supervised practice, passed a national exam given by the Commission on Dietetic Registration, and keeps up with continuing education. Learn more on our page What Is an RDN?
LDN stands for Licensed Dietitian/Nutritionist. Rhode Island licenses dietitians through the Rhode Island Department of Health. State law says that only a person licensed or authorized under the law may practice dietetics or use the title "dietitian/nutritionist" or the letters L.D.N. (R.I. Gen. Laws § 5-64-4).
How to check a provider's license
You can look up any Rhode Island health professional's license with the Department of Health's free license verification search. It takes about a minute and gives you peace of mind. When you see "RD, LDN" or "RDN, LDN" after a name, you know that person has met both national and state standards.

How a Dietitian Can Help
A registered dietitian looks at your health history, your daily life, your food preferences, and your goals, then works with you on a plan you can actually live with. We focus on overall health and well-being, not quick-fix diets. Read What to Expect to see how a first visit works.
Through Medical Nutrition Therapy and our programs, we support adults, children, and families. Programs include:
Prevent T2: a group lifestyle program for people with prediabetes, part of the CDC-led National Diabetes Prevention Program.
Metabolic Weight Management: a step-by-step program that begins with group Medical Nutrition Therapy with a registered dietitian.
Concierge Health Rx: for people who want the option of medical treatment as part of their weight and metabolic health plan, with care from Cindy, our nurse practitioner (NP).
Her Health: practical classes on women's hormones, nutrition, and metabolism.
Nutrition in Action: a dietitian-led program focused on balanced eating, meal planning, and overall wellness.
Pediatric nutrition: care for infants, children, teens, and their families.
Insurance and Coverage
We accept many major plans, including BCBSRI, UnitedHealthcare, Aetna, Cigna, Harvard Pilgrim, and Medicare. Coverage varies by plan, so please check your plan's nutrition counseling benefits. A few things to know:
Out-of-state Blue Cross plans are out of network with our practice.
