Understanding Insurance Coverage for Nutrition Services
Many insurance plans offer coverage for Medical Nutrition Therapy, but benefits can vary based on your plan and diagnosis. The questions below are designed to help you understand how coverage works and what to expect before getting started.
-
Many health insurance plans do cover Medical Nutrition Therapy when it’s provided by a registered dietitian and medically indicated — especially for conditions like diabetes, kidney disease, heart disease, digestive disorders, and other chronic health concerns. Coverage varies by plan and diagnosis, so we recommend verifying your specific benefits.
-
Here’s what you should know:
Insurance may cover MNT services — including assessments and follow-up sessions — when ordered or recommended by a healthcare provider.
Some plans require a referral or prescription from your doctor first.
Coverage differs by plan type (private insurance, Medicare, Medicaid) and state.
Registered dietitians are much more likely to be covered than nutritionists without RD credentials because of payer credential requirements.
Medicare covers MNT for people with diabetes or chronic kidney disease when a referral is provided, with a set number of hours in the first year and follow-up years.
-
To find out what your plan covers:
Call the number on the back of your insurance card.
Ask if your plan covers Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) with CPT codes:
97802 (initial assessment)
97803 (follow-up visits)
97804 (group MNT, where applicable)
Ask whether a referral or diagnosis requirement applies.
If you need help with this, or get stuck with the insurance. plan’s customer service team, please reach out to our patient coordinator for assistance at 401-398-2454.
Most plans also allow you to use HSA/FSA funds toward copays, deductibles, or uncovered nutrition services.
-
If your plan doesn’t cover nutrition services, you still have options:
Out-of-network reimbursement: We can provide a superbill that you can submit to your insurer for possible reimbursement.
FSA/HSA payment: Use tax-advantaged funds for part or all of your care.
We do offer flexible payment plans or self-pay options.
Please make sure to communicate with our patient coordinator or a member of our healthcare team before your first session if you would like to take advantage of one of these offers.
